A Stroke of Magic - The Last Hawaiian Princess

Spending time at Discovery Casa is always an adventure! Just ask Italian American twins Alex and Ella, and their Afro Panamanian friend Layla. The three friends are happy to be together again and even happier when they discover that the retirement home’s most talented artist, Art, has a new painting to show them.

Beautiful and enigmatic, the painting shows a woman on a beach with a peacock by her side. With the help of Emet, the magical paintbrush, the three friends jump into the painting and travel back in time to the Kingdom of Hawai’i, where they meet Princess Ka’iulani. She teaches them how to make a lei, dance the hula, and the importance of preserving one’s culture and language.

A Stroke of Magic - The dinosaur woman

Ella and Alex are seven-year-old Italian American twins who often go to Discovery Casa, a retirement home where their mother works as a nurse. One day, while there, they meet Layla, a six-year-old Afro-Panamanian girl who goes to Discovery Casa to visit her Abuelita, who tells the three friends that there is a new resident named Art--but nobody knows anything about him because he doesn't speak to anyone. Curious, Ella, Alex, and Layla go on a mission to find out who he is and they soon discover that he is an artist who painted a rather unusual and, at first glance, incorrect painting: three dinosaurs on a beach, with a woman in the background. What is a woman doing among dinosaurs? They wonder.

In the first book, the pivotal figure is Mary Anning, the female paleontologist whose findings on England’s Jurassic Coast contributed to the theory of evolution put forth by Charles Darwin and uncovered secrets about dinosaurs. However, many of her discoveries were unfairly credited to male paleontologists because of her gender, and as a result, history has overlooked her pioneering role.

The Willow City Boys Series

Spelunking Under the Outhouse

When brothers, Levi and Deevee, discover the existence of a cave under Willow City, a small 1950s town in North Dakota, they have to share it with their best friends, Gus and Mike. Together, the boys cannot resist the search for the elusive cave entrance hidden by the town’s mayor for safety reasons. Finding it will take creative minds, a bit of sneakiness, and skills that small-town life helps build. But problems develop when an old Chippewa woman demands they stay away from the cave. Last seen fifty years ago, her knowledge of the sight only intrigues the boys, especially, after Levi is frightened by her.

The middle-school-aged boys decide to press forward and begin the search for clues, but it will not be easy. As a series of events point to a location, they are forced to keep it a secret, too, for fear their plans will be thwarted by safety-conscious adults. The boys risk their lives figuring out the secret the old Chippewa woman will not fully reveal. The Willow City boys work together to find the cave, explore it, and solve the reason its entrance was hidden so many years before.
